What Consumes the Most Energy in your home?

Source: Cristina Miguelez

During the holiday season when the whole family comes together under one roof to celebrate, it’s more important then ever to try and conserve energy. We all know the cliche thermostat spat where dad turns it down to leave you freezing to death under the covers and no one will admit to turning it back up. Well, it turns out, dad might have a point.

Electricity bills have been on the rise recently, making now a good time to take a look at what you’re spending your energy on. Once you know where your biggest energy expenditures are, you can then take steps to help save energy and money each month. What better time to start than during the holidays?

According to the EIA, the biggest single source of energy consumption by far in the home is tied to heating, which uses more than 31% of the energy consumed. Beyond space heating and other uses, water heating takes the next biggest piece of the pie at more than 13%, followed by the appliances used to cool your home, which uses 12% of the energy consumed.

Steps you can do now to save money:

  • Add insulation where it’s lacking

  • Seal up any gaps around windows & doors, or replace them

  • Upgrade to an on-demand water heater

  • Unplug electronics, turn off lights and water when not in use
